This morning I decided that our hotel room reminds me of the one I had in Germany although it was even smaller. The owner lived in a part of the building and sat around talking and drinking with the guests every evening.
We drove down to Key West, FL and spent the day there. We walked all over the historic old town. On the way down we saw the mangrove swamps. These trees are small when growing in the water but get larger when they grow on land. The keys aren't just a few large islands but also many islands that are not more than a couple of acres in size. The ground is really almost all water with many small and very small islands. Much of the rest is just marshland.
Just before we got to Key West, we saw a blimp similar to the one we saw in Arizona near the US/Mexican border. That one was used look for drug smugglers and people trying to cross the border. We were told that this one is a weather blimp but "may" be used to watch Cuba too.
The houses in the old part of town are really nice with wonderful architecture. They have very strict standards on what can be done to the houses. One item is that they must retain their original color.
There were many flowers, bushes and trees blooming.
We made it to the southern most part of the United States. There was a waiting line for everyone to get their picture taken there. Cuba is only 90 miles from there.
There is a portion of the railroad that Henry Flagler completed in 1912. Most of it was ruined in the 1935 hurricane. At the time it helped the wealthy to get to the keys to vacation.
Of course we saw Ernest Hemingway's house as well as Truman's "Little White House," Jimmy Buffet's Marguritaville, the Hog's Breath Saloon and the Green Parrot Bar. Key West most of the time appears to just be a big party town with many bars and just shops to buy all types of things. There are a lot of art galleries also. But, when you drive through other parts, it has all the things that a regular town would have. The streets are quite narrow and parking is almost non-existent.
